Return of the Living Dead

Okay, so I'm finally starting to feel better. I'm sure that's a great comfort to my 2 readers. When I get sick it usually lasts for a day or two. This "cold" has hung on for over 2 weeks so I thought maybe it was a good idea to see my doctor. He helped as usual.

I love my doctor. He's gay which makes it much more comfortable to discuss issues that may pertain to my filthy li'l lifestyle. I first started seeing him when I moved to DC. He works right in Dupont Circle so it's very convenient. At the time, I was a poor college student with no insurance so he would not charge me whenever I went to him. Very cool.

I had just transferred to AU from RIT after switching my majors once again. I was beginning to feel I was having problems concentrating and that was causing me to switch majors every other semester (or maybe I'm just hard to please). When I first started college I was a liberal arts major, then I declared my major Film & Video, then I declared my major Criminal Justice, then I declared my major Psychology. I believe most people go for psychology degrees so they can get free therapy via school work and no one really has to know they are fucked up because it's disguised as a "class". I'm pretty sure that's why I went into it. I was also really good at it (which means I was really good at diagnosing my neurosis).

I had heard about this thing called Adult ADD and thought "hmmmm, this sounds like me!" Keep in mind this was in '93 when Adult ADD was rarely discussed. I went to my cool doctor and told him I thought I may have it. He said that I would need to see a psychiatrist and take a bunch of tests to get a real diagnosis. I knew I couldn't afford to do that so I just let it go (and continued to take classes, drop classes, etc). Anyway, I finally did graduate. I have no idea how but I did. 11 years later I went back to the same doctor and again suggested that maybe I have Adult ADD (because of work issues and because all those pharmaceutical commercials lured me into believing I had it). He said, "Well, you have seemed really scattered throughout the years." Gee, thanks. He prescribed me legal cocaine aka Ritalin. It seems to work when I really need it but I can't take it too often. It makes me really jittery and I start to mimic a sparrow's movements. They shake and their heads move very quickly every which way. Next time you see a sparrow, observe its movements and think of me on drugs.

Illin'

Had a great time with the 'rents. As usual, they started fixing things around the place. We even made a stop at the Home Depot. My dad noticed one of our stairs was kind of splitting so he had to replace it. While lifting up that particular stair our little storage space beneath it was revealed. There was a box full of old cards and school papers. I started to go through some of them. I hardly remember writing any of them. Guess I really was not present during those years. I had written a paper for one of my Psychology classes on S & M titled "Fuck Me Gently With a Chainsaw" ( a line lifted from the movie "Heathers). My mom was pleased to see that.

Anyway, I came down with a cold while they were here. It didn't get too bad until they left. Then I saw this nastiness and it made me sicker. So glad I canceled my subscription a few years ago.

The 'Rents Are Coming

My parents are making their annual trek down to visit us today. This is their layover on the way to the real vacation in Nags Head, NC. I actually look forward to seeing them. They love to fix things around the place that Rob and I have neglected. My mom still brings tons of groceries as if I'm still in college (laundry detergent, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, etc). I made the mistake once of telling her that I was learning how to make pizza. She started bringing/mailing tons of pizza crust packets on a regular basis. It got to the point where we had no more room for them. I also lost interest in making pizzas after the second try so I didn't need or want them anymore. I had to let her down gently. As I've gotten older I've learned to appreciate them so much more. They are very low maintenance and insist on only staying a couple days. How cool is that?

The only downside is we have to completely de-sex the place (and that can take hours). I'm always paranoid one little thing will be left out. A while back, Rob's ex-girlfriend was visiting. She saw what appeared to her as a bracelet on the floor. She picked it up and tried it on, waving her arm about as if to say: "look how great this looks on me." We didn't have the heart to tell what it really was. Poor thing.

We let my parents sleep in our bed. We take the sofa bed in the other room. I always feel the need to tell them that the sheets were just washed. It's sort of my subtle way of saying "The sheets are clean so you shouldn't find any santorum on them." Fingers crossed.

My parents are good people. They grew up in the hills (literally) of West Virginia but escaped to Rochester, NY in the '60's to find better opportunities. They both have the gift of independent thought which is very rare coming from those parts. My dad had 7 other brothers and sisters. They lived in a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom house up on a mountain. I don't know how they did it. I remember driving up on the side of the mountain overlooking a river down below to get to their house. Only one vehicle could fit on the road at a time. If you saw another car coming around one of the bends someone would have to back up and get out of the way. Did I mention we were really high up?

I haven't been back to that area in years. The mind set is just way too different. I can't relate. I also cannot stomach the roads that go back and forth and in circles. Just thinking about it makes me wanna puke.

Anyway, they will be here soon. Wish me luck.
