Shoo-Fly Pie!
"No kitty, it's my shoo-fly pie!"
My Mennonite Amish friend, BM, went up to Pennsylvania to visit his family. I think he went to help them churn butter or something. Anyway, I asked him to bring me back a shoo-fly pie. The Amish are excellent cooks (cuz there's not a whole lot of TV to watch, not even Project Runway!), and this kind of dessert is a specialty of theirs. So he rode his horse and buggy back today to make the delivery.
My mom got me hooked on these damn things as a kid. We would always stop at a Dutch Pantry when we were on vacation to satisfy my mother's cravings. The ingredients sound kinda disgusting, but it actually tastes delicious. It's nice and moist, and feels really good in your mouth.
The pie is just about gone, but I thought I would offer you a bite.

Screw the shoo-fly pie, I want a bite of your cream.

Chris:
You can have a bite, but it kinda tastes like the smell of bleach.

Mine smells like that too, if a bit salty. It reminds me of a municipal pool, actually.

The more common version of the recipe — sometimes referred to as "wet bottom"
Sounds yummy and messy, but in the good way.

And it actually is a "wet bottom" that I've been devouring.

There's an Amish market in southern Maryland. It's somewhere near Hughsville and Leonardtown I think. I'm not sure. It's sort of out in the country and one tree looks the same as another to me. I got a kitten there once. My boyfriend was trying to distract me from the baby ducks and bunnies. She later pooped on him in the car on the way home. I thought it looked like she was making a kitty poop-face but my boyfriend was yelling so I figured that must not be it. Then he started yelling... It was a kitty poop-face. I'm pretty sure I've seen shoo-fly pie there.
Also, in Annapolis there's a Dutch market (looks Amish to me - I should know about these things since I come from a part of the planet that has lots of Amish but I don't think I was paying attention when someone explained these things). I think I've seen shoo-fly pie there.
And in Dover, Delaware there's an Amish market at Spence's Bizaar (it really should be called Spence's Bizarre but you'd probably have to live in Dover to understand why). I bought shoo-fly pie there. The Amish market seems to be open only on Tuesdays and Fridays.
I may not actually understand the difference between Amish, Mennonite and Pennsylvania Dutch (even though my boyfriend dragged me to a Penn. Dutch festival up in, I think, Kutztown last year) but I don't know if I've actually been interested enough to find out. But I do know a lot of places to get shoo-fly pie. I don't nuthin' 'bout no apple pan dowdy.

wet bottoms are actually much better than the dry ones, unless of course you warm it up and serve with vanilla ice cream . Teej, i'm glad I could assist in your little indulgence and thanks again for hanging out with us. we had a great time and I truly miss you guys tons! Love ya!
