He Lives

Everyone is all in a tizzy about the holiday weekend. For me, it brings back memories of a particular moment during an Easter church service. We were singing this for the umpteenth time:

"He lives, He lives
Chrisssssst Jesssssus lives today
He walks with me and talks with me
Along life's narrow way"

I started to black out. I sat down, told my parents something was wrong and projectile vomited boiled eggs all over the pew. My dad threw me over his shoulder and ran to the bathroom. Old women were screaming and clutching their pearls, as I dangled upside down on my dad's back. In between egg yolks, I would mutter, "He has risen."

I suppose it was God's Will.

Anyway, my parents are coming into town tomorrow - not for the holiday - just because it's cheaper to stay here than a hotel, on their way to the outer banks. I still plan to hide Easter baskets for them.

I hope your weekend brings back joyous childhood memories for you.

DC is on the way to the Outer Banks? From ... Montreal? Chile' ... take the ferry from Bath, or just drive up to Manteo and down.

"In between egg yolks, I would mutter, 'He has risen.' I suppose it was God's Will."

Did I read this right...God's will rose between the yolks?

Ever thought of a career in porn screenwriting?

That was my favorite hymn growing up. Sometimes during the Sunday evening service, they'd let the congregation request hymns, and I'd request that one.

We didn't do the projectile vomiting at my church, though. It must be one of those regional intra-denominational differences, like whether to use pieces of pie dough or matzo to accompany the grape juice at communion.

That is so freaking insane, all morning on my walk to work, for some unknown reason this song was in my head (oh, now I remember, I heard in a story on the news last night about how in the south, some businesses are hiring preachers to counsel people during the day at work).
Weird.

My Christian past is far behind me, but, I always enjoyed the hymn "Welcome Happy Morning, Age to Age Shall Say!". :)

Does this happen often when you attend church services? Have you ever watched The Exorcist? Maybe there is a connection there... Hmmmmm.

The hymm "Were you there when they crucified my Lord" has been playing in my head all week.

When I was growing up there was a man named Mr. Keys who was a very old african american man who sang in my church's choir. Every year on Good Friday he would sing this hymm. It was very moving and I think of him everytime I hear it.

You were possessed. Please see an exorcist immediately.

My favorite childhood memory of Easter was when we spent it at my grandparents. The night before Easter, my parents tied one on with friends and then decided hide eggs around my grandparents' home.
They forgot where they hid most of the eggs, and my poor grandmother was stumbling on old rotten hard-boiled eggs for months. In addition, my father was very hungover Easter morning. Nothing pays tribute to the risen JC like the dry heaves during mass.

My favorite hymn is St. Patrick's breastplate with the middle verse:

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

"Christ in mouth of friend and stranger"? Seemed so very gay to me. Not to mention "behind me", "within me", "beneath me" and, yes, "above me".

It doesn't take much reading between the lines to see that Jesus was a big 'mo. I mean, come on, John was his bitch: the Bible says that plain as day.

But we should probably keep that entre nous. It freaks Christians the hell out when you say that to them, and after the smoke stops coming out of their ears, they have a tendency to get violent.

I'm guessing that John and Jesus had an open relationship but were pretending to be monogamous. It's hard to say, though, since there weren't any blogs in those days, or even craigslist for Judas to post a missed connection on (Missing the man from Nazareth m4m - 33; I only got u crucified so that ud notice me. I know it was wrong, but now that ur back from the dead, if u read this, can we get coffee?). We're so lucky to live in the modern world.

All this disrespect for the risen Christ.....shame.

Q: Why can't Jesus be a beggar?

A: Coins keep falling through his hands.

I'm not really in a tizzy about the weekend. I'm more all of a dither about it.

But I don't believe in God so maybe that explains that. This pretty much sums up what I believe:

I think this guy's got it right, including his thoughts on how life still has plenty of meaning [even] without a belief in God.

Childhood is never something I look back on fondly. Not without some sort of alcoholic beverage in hand anyway. *G*

Hope you have a good holiday and visit with the parental units.

When I was a kid I used to pass out in church all the time. Not sure why. Didn't matter if I was standing, sitting or kneeling. Catholic guilt building up maybe.
