CSI: DC

Violent crime has gotten so bad in DC lately that the new police chief put all cops on duty last weekend.

It didn't seem to help.

A good friend of mine was the victim of a break-in during that weekend. They took off the bars of his back window, climbed in and stole some valuables (laptop, camera, checkbook). This all occurred during the day when he wasn't there. He was in the process of selling his home. He believes a realtor was coming in to show the place and scared them off, so they couldn't get anything else. Because the LAST TIME this happened to him, they got away with a hell of a lot more, like $14,000 worth of stuff.

There have been several robberies in broad daylight in the Ledroit Park area. A group of about five young thugs are responsible for a number of those.

Bob has alerted us to a couple articles that have more information. And Clickboo posted a frightening account by someone who called 911 as someone was breaking into his house. The police never showed up, even hours later.

My place is fairly difficult to break into but I'm sure it's possible. Our back patio is enclosed by several large walls. Someone could probably scale it, but once in, it's hard to get out. It's like a roach motel. And trying to get into our back gate that shields the door to the house would pose an enormous amount of work and time to remove. A neighbor did catch someone trying to scale our wall last year around 1:00am, but scared him off with a litany of profanity.

And all of our windows are on the second floor, which are hard to get to without a big ladder, and they also have bars on them.

If someone were able to do a home invasion here, I would probably move immediately. That intense of a violation would break my sensitive thick skin. Of course, someone did try to enter my residence before, as I mentioned a while back, but I suspect it might have been my neighbor looking to "experiment".

If I caught someone in my home, I'm not sure what I would do. I guess I could grab a butcher's knife, but I don't want to get blood all over our beautiful hardwood floors, and, really, if they have guns, I don't have a chance. Apparently, it's legal to own pepper spray if it's registered. That could be kinda interesting. So once they're screaming and blinded, I would beat the bejesus out of the intruders with a large black dildo (it's not mine!). That would totally cause some damage, cuz it's huge and so hard! After the beating, I would make them suck it -- all the way. Then I would make them sit through multiple showings of Sordid Lives.

It does make an anti-gun person like me consider owning a gun when you hear all these stories. I would get one like Anger Hangover has. And she would show me how to use it. Don't fuck with lesbians. They'll blow your goddamn head off.

I suppose I could move to a farm and feed chickens and Brett, and make naughty videos to post, while poorly lip-synching to a Fergie song during the buttsex, but I don't think anywhere is really safe, obviously.

Why don't the poor understand how good this economy is for them?

You know as I was reading this post eating my Fruit Loops cereal this morning. I was like "Wow. TJ has a serious post today." Then as I neared the end of the post, I saw "farm" and "chickens" and began to smile. I didn't spit out my Fruit Loops until I got to the "poorly lip-synching to a Fergie song" part. Ha Ha!

Let me emphasize that holding up a Mac Book Pro, getting the best angle so my nose doesn't look like Gonzo's and remembering to suck-in for dear life always takes up to 99 percent of my abilities. Lip Synching to a Fergie song becomes soooo secondary in importance!

Thanks for brightening my day! BIG HUG. You can feed me anytime. ;)

You need a bunch of elderly Mexican women living on your street. They ensure that no one ever dares to break into your casa.

Having two small and chubby barking dogs gives me a feeling of security at home. Plus they are darn cute. However, I do find myself avoiding being out in the streets at night alone.

My unofficial analysis is that crime has increased over the past few years in the Logan/U street area. I am on the Wallach Place list serve and it is eye opening to read how on just that one block there seemingly is a break-in or street robbery almost every week!

I was talking to a neighbor who has lived in his S St house 40 + years and he told how he was followed to his porch recently and attacked by two guys in a robbery attempt. He didn’t bother to report it to the police. He didn’t think the police would do anything and he feared retribution. Sad!

I think we should all arm ourselves with taser guns. You have no idea how many times I've wanted to taser people. Dumb Jennifers blocking the crosswalk? Tasered. Crazy homeless guy harassing me? Tasered. Guy talking in the movie theater? Totally tasered.

When the police actually do show up after I call 911, it's never in under twenty minutes and that's when I call for gun shots on my street! Based on their response time in my small corner of Baltimore City, I can't imagine how "quickly" they'd respond to a 911 call for a home invasion. I can't rely on the police to get here quickly, if at all, and I can't assume a stranger or strangers coming into my house at 2 a.m. will be of the reasonable, non crack-smoking variety, hence my little 9mm friend that you linked to.

Recently, there have been two murders (one of them on Monday) and two forced-entry-into-the-home rapes within, yes, two blocks of me. I sleep much better at night knowing that I have the professional training and means to defend myself in my own home. Gun control is a steady hand.

I'm very selective about the people who grip my pistol, but I'd let you grip mine. And Of course I'd show you how to use it too. She's a sexy little b*tch!!

I have a wicked serrated pruning knife ready for when I need it, and a copper lightning rod +1 against crackheads if necessary.

I'll admit that I purchased a gun last week. I was mugged, at gunpoint, several weeks ago; and it changed my thinking. I have no fear or qualms over using it, either. Up in B'more they're talking about setting a curfew for teenagers. I think it's a great idea, since the majority of crimes are committed by child-thugs. Of course, groups are calling it racist. That gets my panties in a wad, since the majority of killings are blacks against blacks. It would be saving their lives, but it's racist???? Don't get me started....LOL

"There is no safety this side of the grave."

And what's more, there never has been. Oh, well; life goes on. Until it doesn't...

I agree with Stebbins about the taser guns.

Taser guns deliver a sharp electrical punch that stuns the person on the receiving end for 3 to 5 minutes. Voltage varies depending on model. It is enough time to either get away or kick them in the neck.

Just remember crack heads can be unpredictable so you may need to stun them twice.

get a real gun if your going to mess with anything. in the end we are all responsible for our own safety and as gays we should be all to aware of how likely our cries for help will be unanswered or ignored.

Why does Aaron hate the poor?

The best part of this post: the sad realization that I probably don't even own $14,000 worth of stuff to steal.

Happy Thursday guys!

I've been robbed at gunpoint and knifepoint in the past. I also grew up in a rural TX w/guns during most of my childhood. I have no fear of using a gun however, I would never even consider owning a gun in an urban area. Besides the risk of self injury (so few folks actually take the time to train), it gives you a false sense of security (superman complex).

Why I may not have all the answers, violence w/more violence never solves anything.

That sucks about the crime increase the lack of police response. I never lived right in the city of D.C., but I used to be out and about years ago by myself or with friends at night without really thinking about crime. Once we found ourselves lost in a particularly hostile-looking neighborhood. Our brilliant solution was to break out the bottle of Southern Comfort we had in the car and start drinking to calm our nerves. Yeah did I mention how brilliant we were? But I never got robbed or car broken into or anything until I moved to Venice in LA. Not sure buying a gun is the answer though, although I have some friends who strongly disagree with me on that. I'm totally on board with what moby said.

I think the Sordid Lives thing is just plain cruel. No burglar deserves THAT!

Posted by: cb at August 3, 2007 10:31 AM

hmmm... makes me glad that I can leave my wallet and my keys in the car at night. I don't think I even own a key to our house. Bars on the windows? You poor thing. I guess my schnauzer alarm does the trick with intended intruders.

This post is one reason I'm not over eager to move to a bigger city. We do have crime here, but I can still leave my house unlocked and it'll be un-intruded on. I have had two lawn mowers stolen from the side of the house, but that's as far as crime's gone here for me. If I owned a gun I'd most likely shoot myself, so that's out. I think screaming like a girly girl works just as well, anyway. But the whip is right there by the bed, too, and I've got the restraints within easy reach, so maybe I'm not as defenseless as I think ...
