I remember reading how a few of the rappers from that area espoused homophobic comments, in particular, Shabba Ranks (I think that's how you spell his name). All in the name of art! I remember being disappointed by Green from Scritti Politti doing a song with Shabba (She's A Woman) and thought, how could you. Yep seems not a tolerant society.

My hubby and I were just discussing this yesterday, when we were recommending a friend might want to reconsider planning a vacation to these homophobic island places, eg, Jamaica, Fiji, Maldives, et al. I'll spend my tourism money where I won't risk doing time for buggery.

I remember going down to Ft. Lauderdale and someone suggested a side trip to either the Bahamas or Jamaica. I could only think, "hmmmm... super gay friendly Ft. Lauderdale where men and sex are all possible? Or Jamaica or Bahamas, where I will be killed if I even say the word 'gay'? Hmmm.... tough one..."

Can't say Jamaica sounds like anything but a horrorshow as a vacation spot.

Though, I do hope they get through the hurricane without too much hurt.

Jamaica, the Bahamas, Grand Cayman and all the other gay-hating islands in the Caribbean can all go piss off as far as I am concerned. I'll gladly spend my money in Puerto Rico where gays are treated the same, if not better, than in some parts of the U.S. On some fronts, they're making more progress than most places in the south and middle of this country!

Greece isn't a model of openness, no matter what short lived excess may occur on one island or another. It is consistently, along with Cyprus and Malta, arrayed against the work for equality within the EU. It's justice system looks like it was the model for Bush's fantasies. It might seem fine standing next to Syria, but not next to Germany, or the Netherlands...

Now Huntington, you know Spain's history with the Catholic church (considered by many to have the moral authority of Pétain) makes things different, especially after Franco. Mexico City is the capital, with PRD rule, and isn't usually as backward as the rest of the country.

Jamaica, or any former British colony in the Caribbean, is pretty much guaranteed to be a hellhole for gays. Give me a nice French colony any time.
