Entourage

I had the chance to meet Bill Clinton during his last year in office. I turned the opportunity down.

A friend of mine -- who worked in the government and several Democratic campaigns -- called and asked if I would be willing to drive a vehicle in the president's motorcade during one of his appearances in Baltimore. Obviously this was so pre-9/11. I would be driving one of about ten vehicles. All drivers would then get to meet and have their picture taken with him, if they hadn't already.

Um, yeah, that's prolly a bad idea.

I didn't have a problem with the background check and whatnot, but visions of me accidentally running over some pregnant woman and slamming into the president's limo, were weighing heavily on my mind. And the video of this horrific scene would be repeated on CNN, BBC World News and Animal Planet all month. And my parents have been embarrassed enough.

Plus, I would have to wear a suit.

At the time, I rarely drove anywhere cuz I got rid of my car, so reacquainting myself with the road -- in a strange vehicle, in a strange city, and with the fucking President of the United States outside my window -- was a bit daunting. I said no. It was for the safety of our country, trust me.

But I would love to meet him someday. He was smart, and I miss smart.

We make fun of Miss Teen South Carolina for butchering a question, but we kinda elected an older version of Miss Teen South Carolina as our Miss Teen Commander-in-Chief, twice. Bill Maher has the proof.

I think you're being charitable suggesting that he was elected, but there isn't much that can be done about that now.

We're currently in a state of lockdown as we prepare for a visit from the most hated man in the "free" world..

Oh, I think there were probably better Bush clips than THAT to choose from.

I have had several near misses with Bill. I actually met Hillary and Chelsea in Georgetown Park Mall the first year of his administration. She was walking out of the Limited with Chelsea as I was walking by. The next thing I know they are right beside me. I introduced myself. She stopped said hello and was very gracious.

I also had the opportunity (with TJ) to visit the White House with a friend of ours who was a uniformed secret service officer. We went in through the east wing. We saw the first ladies formal reception area, the movie theater (I sat in Bill’s chair), onward through the house to the west wing. We saw the oval office, and the cabinet room. We also went into the basement where we saw the scorch marks left over from when the British burned the white house, the bowling alley (they had personalized bowling shoes), the kitchen, the florist and for the grand finally we held Socks the first family’s cat. Socks had been relegated to the basement because he was scratching the antiques in the white house. We also spent forth of July on the white house lawn as a guest. Clinton addressed the staffers and their families. He literally had just returned from a triumph trip to Europe. Remember the days we when the US garnered respect in the world.

Lastly I saw Clinton at an event for John Kerry. I was with a friend. She was born and raised in NY so she naturally took charge. She grabbed my hand and said “We are going to the front.” We made our way through a thousand annoyed people all the way to the front. Standing on stage before Clinton arrived was a beautiful young woman. I stared for a few minutes when it finally occurred to me Natalie Portman was right in front of us. Clinton came over took over the room and inspired us all.

DB: Rob also provided security for one of the lesbians from Queer as Folk. The same guy who offered me the driving gig, organized a fundraiser for John Kerry in DC with the actors from Queer as Folk. Most of the actors canceled at the last minute, but one of the lesbians and the guy who had the meth problem showed up. Rob was asked to keep a watch on her and make sure no one was harrassing her, so he was holding her hand and walking her around. It was quite fun to watch.

I remember the day after the "tribal" comments happened. Just pathetically shaking my head... shaking and also screaming at the same time. It was an interesting combination of emotions rarely stimulated by any other person I know.

I do feel sorry for the girl, though. She's young. Hopefully she will be able to laugh and roll with it, cause it's not really that big a deal. I mean, she should probably read more or something, but it's not really super embarrassing.

Um, yeah, it was super embarrassing.

Because of my dad's connections with a local congressman, James Carville called my parents house to ask if I could help join the Clinton campaign (Bill's first presidential election) and work in Arkansas. My parents were scared to have me go all the way to Arkansas by myself. Like a dumbass, I chickened out. I had never been that far away from home.

tijjy, baby, you would have been a phabulous motorcade driver. you would have put on your prada sunglasses, nodded to the fans, and sped into the sunset. i still wish you would've done it. as it was, i ended up getting gary coleman to take your place. he could barely see over the dashboard and almost grazed a secret service agent on the way to the speech. good times. funny - they never asked me to organize another motorcade . . . ;o)
