The Bears Love Harris Teeter

In keeping with my grocery store theme this week...Harris Teeter just opened a few blocks from me. I had no idea. I rarely venture into Adams Morgan behind 18th Street. But I will now! It's lookin' mighty purty in that area. It's even a few blocks closer than the Soviet Safeway, and much closer than Whole Foods. And since it's like a combo of the two -- yay!

It's an awesome place to get both organic, free-range, low-carb, imported hemp spinach AND Rice Krispie treats if you have the munchies. Yay!

I don't think they are really promoting it yet. There was hardly anyone there. Yay! It was a beautiful thing. I did run into a bear friend who was loitering out front, sniffing and roaring, with foam dripping around his mouth. No doubt, the scent of fresh, mercury-free salmon lured him out of his den. Also, they were handing out a ton of sausage samples with li'l toothpicks. When I saw him, I was all, "raaaaahhhhh," and he was all, "raaaahhhhh! Me hungggggg-ray!" Then we sniffed each other and I mounted him. Yay!

Why do grocery stores play obscure songs from the '80's and '90's? I love it, though. As you're searching for some reduced-fat, tomato & basil feta cheese, you can rack your brain trying to figure out what song is playing. It's fun. While I was there, I heard Peter Gabriel's "Steam," Nu Shooz's "Point of No Return" and Bruce Springsteen's "Tunnel of Love." Yay!

I encourage all of you in the 'hood to check it out NOW. They are offering some really good deals for the grand opening and bein' all super friendly and shit. Evvvveryone says hi and asks if they can help you find something. Did you hear that Safeway? It's 'tude-free (at least this week)! Go now! Oh, and they are giving out free samples, even of some of their desserts! Yay! Of course, I didn't take any cuz Gwenyth Paltrow wouldn't touch that toxicity.

I give this place four bear paws. Muscle bear paws, of course.

Three grocery stores are now in walking distance. Now I just need a Wegmans nearby and my grocery list will be complete.

TJ, come visit me in Tucson and I'll take you to Mexican Safeway and you'll experience true Safeway employee friendliness. I always leave knowing that they really, truly care about me.

I have to say out here in Herndon-ia I always go to Harris Teeter. Mind you, the next closest grocery stores are a Shoppers, where I think I might get shot, and a Food Lion, which is conveniently located next to the ABC store here, which tends to bring in the wrong element sadly.
So I go to Harris Teeter, which is full of Restoniness, cause nothing screams yuppie like Reston. Towncenter et all.
But it's clean, and the staff is nice . . even if it is over priced.
I think I'm jealous of the bear factor however.
What is wrong with this picture? I live in the wilderness and I can't find a muscle bear, yet you have them in abundance in the city.
DC is a strange strange little world all of its own.

I gotta drive 8 miles to the nearest supermarket. TJ, those are easy listening tunes for your demographic..its all a marketing ploy to keep you hummin' and happy

Here in Chicago the bears seem to love Whole Foods and Treasure Island (America's Most European Supermarket TM.) Plenty of Mandies in the aisles at all times. Our version of Safeway(Dominicks...a Safeway Company) while not Soviet seems to take a certain amount of glee in moving each item to a different spot in the store every day. They have such fun watching the shoppers scurry...the staff sounds like the same high quality folks you have in DC tho..."sorry I'm closed...I SAID I'M CLOSED...CAN"T YOU HEAR?!?!?"

Unfortunately since we moved to the burbs the closest we get to hot muscle bears at the store is flabby soccer moms going thru the change and gettin a little fuzzy...YUCK!

Leo, when I was in Herndon recently (end of Feb thru Mar17th) I shopped at the Hairy Peters. My sister lives like 10 mins from it and it was the closest decent grocery store. Still doesn't beat our New Seasons out here in Portland though.

Do I even ask about the Soviet Safeway?

Wow. That's a lot of Yays! for one post. Yay!

*sob* Harris Teeter used to be my favorite supermarket evah before they abandoned the Atlanta market. Sure, they were a bit more expensive than, say, Kroger or, god forbid, Winn-Dixie, but the consistent freshness and quality of the fare and the level of service by the un-surly staff were mighty appealing. And we didn't even have muscle bears. Dang, I am so jealous!

I never got to shop at Harry Peter (aka the Harry Teat) in North Carolina, because it was too far away to be convenient.

Alas I was stuck with Kroger and Food Lion. Tres ghetto.

Good to see you and Rob there this week. I went back this afternoon for more yummy supplies...especially meat. It definitely deserves your 4 MBPs rating!

I live too close to the Soviet Safeway to shop at Harris Teeter, but it is close by the pottery studio. I'll have to pop in to see what they have to offer.

Cool! I used to shop there when I lived in Durm, North Care-line-uh. But I heard that Dolly Parton had bought Big Star, Harris Teeter and Piggly Wiggly recently and was going to merge them all. New name: Big Wiggly Teeter.

Wegmans?! good lord. don't tell me you're from up here? hmmm..ya know...I THOUGHT there was something a little familiar about...oh...wait...OMG!!! It's YOU....do you, by any chance, remember the night at the forum when...oh...god...no...never mind.

He said Teeter! If you want serious supermarket suckage, you have to come to the northeast and experience Shaw's. I'm surprised you can't hear my neighborhood market in Boston sucking down in DC.

Fortunately, Trader Joe's opened in Boston, so I am not force to give my hard earned to either Shaw's, or that tool of Satan, Whole Foods.
